Sikhism originated in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, around the end of the 15th century. The beliefs of Sikhs are compiled in their sacred scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib. Their main beliefs include meditation on the one creator, unity of all humankind, selfless service, and social justice. Today, Sikhism is the ninth largest religion in the world, and growing fast. I originally thought the Sikh population in Northern Virginia would be almost nothing, but one of my friends who is Sikh, Ravdeep informed me of the vast numbers of Sikhs in the area. There are numerous Sikh temples in the Fairfax region with over a hundred Sikhs going to each one. Ravdeep invited me to accompany her to the Sikh temple where they hold a service Wednesday nights. I was excited to attend and experience the Sikh service because it was like no other religion I had experienced or heard of before… and that is the gospel truth.
